McGinness

Compiled by Ann Simmons Eldredge

John McGinness, the son of James McGinness and Mary Scott, was born Feb. 13, 1813 in Cavett's Mills, Findlay Township, Pa., and died Aug., 24 1845 in Birmingham (now a part of Pittsburgh's South Side).

In 1836, John married Hannah Cubbage, daughter of George Cubbage (and niece of James Cubbage). John and Hannah had at least one child-George Edward McGinness. George is reportedly buried at St. Clair Cemetery, but no marker has been found. According to "McGinness and Scott Families and Their Branches" by McGinness & Ford (1892). George was born December 1841 and died June 21, 1862 and was a member of the Co. E, 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The book reports his tombstone inscription read "He, like many others, for the love of liberty, and to put down rebellion, offered himself upon the altar of his country."
